Doors to Care Open for a Cancer SurvivorA bout with cancer taught 66-year-old Sandy many lessons. One of the least pleasant: People without insurance are sometimes treated as second-class citizens. Sandy beat her cancer, but was left with a number of other health problems to manage. When other health care providers denied her care because of her lack of insurance, she came to HealthPoint and expected the worst. "I was kind of reluctant because I was in this clinic without insurance," she says. "Normally, you don't get the same attention as people who have insurance." That was before Sandy met HealthPoint's Eric Parsons MD, who immediately scheduled her with a specialist at the University of Washington and began working closely with her on her health issues. Working with Dr. Parsons, Sandy secured discounted medication, a free mammogram, and membership in a health plan that helps pay for her medical care. "Doors opened due to Dr. Parsons' involvement," Sandy says. "And the medical assistant and physician's assistant who also helped me were compassionate, professional, and caring in every sense of the word. I only wish I'd had that kind of care when I had insurance." |
