Can You Eat Carbohydrates When You have Diabetes?

Share

The most common question our Nutrition team at HealthPoint gets from patients is, “I was told to cut out carbs to manage my blood sugar. Is it true?” It is nearly impossible to cut out all carbs, but it's also not healthy to do so. Carbohydrates provide important vitamins, minerals, and fiber. For a person with diabetes, the number of carbohydrates they eat, and the source of the carbs are key recommendations for the diet.

What if we told you that carbohydrates are neither good nor bad and that it’s all about moderation? HealthPoint Bothell Dietitian, Evelyn Byun explains, “Many fad diets and non-health care professionals are using the word bad or good to describe food but that’s not the way how we describe food.” Evelyn goes on to explain that it’s all about moderation and that healthy carbs have a lot of nutrients that are needed to fuel the body and promote good health. Nutrients from healthy carbs can be found in foods like whole grains, legumes, dairy, vegetables, and fruits.

According to The World Health Organization (WHO), diabetes has risen from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014 with a majority of the rise happening in low to middle-income countries. For some people, diabetes can have mild symptoms and may take years to notice. Early diagnosis is key to managing the effects of this condition and is recommended to schedule regular appointments with your provider for checkups and blood tests.
